City Park

In January 2020 Artefact was engaged by JMD Design on behalf of Penrith City Council (Council) to prepare an Aboriginal and Historic Heritage Assessment (HIS) for the development of City Park at the corner of Station Street and Henry Street, Penrith.

Due to the nature of the site being in the vicinity of three listed heritage items, our expertise was sought to evaluate the proposed works and assist in ensuring the integrity of the surrounding area. With the help of our documentation Council granted approval subject to conditions for the park works.

OUR
SOLUTION

In June 2023, Artefact was engaged by Council to provide an addendum to the approved HIS submitted with the proposal development application to support a new s4.55 modification. The modification proposed to remove the raised garden bed, facing Station Street and interpret it in situ.

Our expertise was sought to evaluate and advise on the proposed modification works and in-situ heritage interpretation works for the raised garden bed.

We assessed that the site would have nil potential to contain locally significant archaeological remains and would only result in neutral physical and minor visual impacts to the listed heritage items in the vicinity.

We identified that, although unlisted, the John Price & Son funeral home had potential for local heritage significance.

As this item was proposed to be demolished, we provided recommendations to archivally record the item and salvage selected materials.

SUCCESS

With the help of our heritage advice playing a part in the collaborative multi-disciplinary project, the new park works were successfully carried out and satisfied Council’s conditions.

We look forward to the park servicing the local community well into the future.

“Thankyou for all your hard work, time and patience over the last three years, we’re proud of everyone's accomplishments on the project. The park was recently opened to the public allowing the local community to enjoy the gardens and amenities. We hope to work with you again in the future.”
