PLANNING FOR PLAY IN THE PARK

A new vision of community amenity inspired a rethink of the Paddocks Precinct in Parramatta Park. Led by the Western Sydney Parklands Trust (now Greater Sydney Parklands), the proposed works encompassed new pathways, shelters and fitness equipment. These fresh ideas required careful assessment, given that many areas within the park fall under World Heritage List, National Heritage List and State Heritage Register protections.

OUR
SOLUTION

Parramatta Park boasts a rich array of natural, Aboriginal and historical heritage values. To evaluate likely impacts, constraints and opportunities, Western Sydney Parklands Trust commissioned Artefact to complete a suite of assessments. This work included a detailed heritage survey, plus consultation with Aboriginal stakeholders to establish local cultural values and guide archaeological excavations. Together, they revealed many possibilities.

SUCCESS

The planned upgrade works were able to proceed under an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit secured by Artefact.

This collaboration, within legislative restrictions, ensured that Western Sydney Parklands Trust can continue to plan enhancements into the future. But for now, visitors are delighting in the park’s new facilities.
